Philosophy of Education

I believe that education, like many things in life, is an on-going process. It requires compassion, discipline and desire. To educate is to teach a child to enjoy learning as well as to instill in each child a longing to know all that they can.

An elementary education for children should include instruction in the fundamental aspects of reading, the mechanics of the English language, and the building blocks of mathematics. Once this groundwork has been laid, students should be introduced to the many and varied wonders of the world, such as the arts, history, science, and technology. Most importantly, students learn best when they are actively involved.

Students can be actively engaged by employing available technology to create auditory and interactive visual content to engage students. Prescreened web content provides valuable resources to further students’ comprehension of curriculum, especially in areas of math, science, and social studies. Individual focus and small group interactions benefit children by promoting active participation in the learning process. Student led small group discussions can offer perspectives that enhance student comprehension. Moreover, parent involvement in their child’s education benefits all parties involved. Regular parent-teacher conferences promote this involvement and builds valuable relationships between the teacher and parent.

Personal growth should also be a part of preparing young people for a fulfilling and rewarding life. A good teacher is one that will take opportunities that may arise to discuss the benefits of good character, responsibility, and kindness towards others. Guidance and direction provided by a caring and loving teacher promote a warm and accepting environment where learning can easily take place. Personal responsibility, accountability, and reflection upon the choices one makes should be an integral part of a teacher’s daily life, as this sets good examples for young children.

Every teacher should be mindful of the fact that each student is precious because someone loves him or her. Teachers have the power to protect and enhance their students’ self-esteem or damage it. This can be one of the most rewarding and challenging responsibilities facing a dedicated and reflective teacher. All instruction and interaction with students should stem from a sincere desire to benefit and educate children. In this education process, a good teacher must keep a sense of humor and an open mind in order to appreciate the diversity of his or her students.
